Memory Garden - by Gavin Lawrence

A dozen members of the club spent the weekend carrying out a garden makeover creating a memory garden for Steve Bass's family. The weather was mostly kind, and everyone was so pleased to be able to do something really positive and memorable. Kathy, Ellie, Dylan and Zach have now got a new space for calm reflection including a new shed, pond area, bench and rose arch as well as some new paths and planting. There are some pictures from the weekend here.

Couch to 5K Programme starts 28th September

Our next Couch to 5K Programme starts on Saturday 28th September, with optional but recommended lead-in sessions on Saturday 14th September and Saturday 21st September. Participation is free for members, but if you know someone outside the club who might benefit from the programme, please let them know about it. The cost of the 12-week programme, including the optional sessions and parkrun graduation, is £17 all inclusive - an absolute bargain, but it gets even better: Graduates who go on to join our club will see that cost deducted from their joining fee. Of course, our main aim is to get people off the couch and running for health and welfare - joining our club is icing on the cake!

The full details of the programmecan be seen here.

Charlotte Randall and Amira Jaffar are to be congratulated on improving their Park Run PBs over the weekend, Charlotte in the Senior Park Run and Amira in the Junior Park Run.

Open meeting results

It was great to see three Reigate Juniors participating in local open meetings last week and with some success.

At Eltham on Tuesday Lucas Nilsson improved his 800m PB for the third time this season, now hitting level 4 under the EA PB awards scheme.

At Aldershot on Wednesday Keegan Stricker Timmermans won the 100m , equalling his PB, and came second in the 800m.

On Saturday Rafi Varah attended the Milton Keynes Open and PB’d in all three of his events, 100m, 300m and 800m.

Reigate Priory AC News 22nd July 2024 (2)

His time in the 100m achieved the level 6 standard under the EA awards, which is particularly impressive as he has another year in this age group.

Reigate Priory AC News 22nd July 2024 (4)

Using his Saturday marathon as a warm-up, Harry Mullard ran a terrific 35:16 at the Elmbridge 10K, a Surrey Road League race, on Sunday morning, followed by Rob Wigley in 36:02, Ben Stanton in 38:18, Jez Greenwood in 42:25, and Rosie Case-Green in a fantastic 51:46. Well done, runners!

Jimmy James Handicap Race 2 18th July

A small but intrepid band of runners braved the heat last Thursday to run the second of the revived Jimmy James Handicap series. Stewart McIntyre kindly volunteered to keep time. Usha, Nat, Moray, Gail, Adrian and Debs helped keep the runners on track.
First home was Scott Fanner who has now amassed 22 points and leads the competition. Scott ran the 4.8 mile course in 37:14 (54:44 including handicap). Scott was followed by Michael McFarlane who clocked 38:01 (55:11), followed by Martin Wadham (33:07 and 56:02). The fastest time of the day was recorded by Andrew Reeves who ran the course in 30:58. MABAC Wimbledon Common Tuesday 6th August 19:30

Please turn out if you can, we need numbers! In past seasons we have enjoyed our best turnouts at Wimbledon; it would be great if we could better the 45 people who turned out a couple of years ago.

This year we have a brand new course starting from the far corner of the car park by Wimbledon Windmill, at the end of Windmill Road on Wimbledon Common (or is it Putney Heath there?) Wimbledon Windmilers will NOT be providing a buffet after the run this year

Details about the venue are on the MABAC website.

The London Scottish Golf Club, next to the Windmill, are ready to help us rehydrate after the run, so there is no need to dash straight off afterwards.

Please note that the venue is within the ULEZ zone so car sharing is probably even more important than usual. Details nearer the time.

MABAC Pairs Relays Sunday 18th August

he MABAC Pairs Relay is to be held on 18th August at Matthew Arnold School, Kingston Road, Staines-upon-Thames, TW18 1PF. Two runners alternate round a flat 1k grass circuit 5 times (i.e. 2x1x5k – making a total of 10k). The relays start at 11 am but registration of the pair must be by 10.30 am. This is a FREE event open only to MABAC league clubs with no points or medals, but fantastic bragging rights for several categories. Participants are encouraged to bring a picnic and a gazebo (well, Ken notes it is likely to rain). MABAC will supply soft drinks.

Cranleigh 7/14/21 Update

Surrey County Council is planning to replace a bridge down Knowle Lane any time up to the end of October, so the MABAC Committee feel that they cannot take the risk of organising the race in 2024. They are currently working towards holding the race on 30th March 2025, which corresponds with the traditional date (and is Mother's Day).

Members News

Neil McDonnell finished the Königsschlösser Marathon in Füssen, Germany in a time of 4:41:44. The marathon is a mix on road, track and trails at the base of the Alps.

Paddy Patrick ran the walls of Lucca parkrun in 23:03. He could have been quicker but the temperature was in degrees Celcius when it would have been ok in Fahrenheit. The route is on top of the renaissance walls that surround the old city and is, to use an often incorrectly applied word, unique. Anyone passing close should make the effort and take part.

Last Saturday 20th July, a few members of the club took part in the inaugural Corner2Corner relay event -- a 90-mile cycle from Hyde Park Corner to Dover, an epic 80-mile relay swim from Dover to Brighton Marina, and finally, a 70-mile relay run from Brighton back to Hyde Park Corner. The cycle and swim took place last weekend, with the six-woman swim team finishing the distance in an incredible 48 hours and 58 minutes, a mammoth challenge that made the run look like a stroll through the park. #

Linda Rodriguez managed to convince Harry Mullard to run 27 miles of the running route with her, from Salfords to Hyde Park Corner, with the promise of a few pints; they were joined by Toby Kent for more than 10 miles from Coulsdon to Morden Hall Park and by both Toby and Julia Dawe for the last few miles through the Wellington Arch at Hyde Park Corner.

Along the way, Harry and Linda stopped briefly to oversee work at the Bass family garden and picked some roadside blackberries for fuel; Toby's route, via the Wandle Trail, was a beauty, through some of the loveliest parks south of London. The event raised money for mental health charity Mind and the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and will hopefully happen again next year.
