Though giraffes have a voice box, one line of thought was that due totheir long necks it was too difficult for the creatures to generate the airflow needed to"vibrate their vocal folds." But University of Vienna researchers now saythey've determined that giraffes do indeed "produce vocalizations" that mayserve as a means of communication. The researchers recorded animals at three Europeanzoos, amassing 947 hours of recordings over eight years. They then analyzed the recordingsvisually, in a process they describe as "time consuming, tedious, and verychallenging." And they did indeed find "structurally interesting hummingvocalizations" that occurred mainly at night and hovered around 92 hertz infrequency; this is within human hearing but very low. As one commenter notes, they sound alittle like the Kraken. Though the researchers couldn't prove the sound is used forcommunication, they found "suggestive hints" that the hum might serve as a"contact call, for example, to re-establish contact with herd mates." Theyspeculate the hums may be occurring at night because giraffes' typically keen visionis less effective then.Read more (and listen to a giraffe hum!) here:https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/2015/09/21/newser-what-sound-giraffe-ma…The Pfoho Newsletter comes out every Monday afternoon (or a day or two later ifthere's a holiday) It's a good resource of all things Pfoho, including events, deadlines, etc., so please take a minute each week to read it over.
