SPREAD THE WEALTH
Concord had five players in double figures for the ninth time this season in Saturday's narrow 85-81 loss to Glenville State. Junior guard JJ Harper finished with 17 points as he led CU in scoring for the fifth time. Senior forward Jevon Laidler scored 15 or more points for the third straight game and the fifth time in the last seven contests, tallying 16 points. Fifth-year senior forward Da'Vion Moore posted a season-best 15 points as he made 5-of-8 shots. Senior guard Ethan Heller matched Moore while graduate guard Lual Daniel Rahama recorded his 11th double-double of the season with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophom*ore forward Amare Smith just missed double figures as he tallied eight points.
DOUBLE DANIEL
With 12 rebounds on Saturday, Rahama secured averaging a double-double for the regular season as he finished with 274 rebounds over 27 games. The Newport News, Virginia native is the only player in the MEC averaging a double-double, and he became the third player at CU since 2000 to average a double-double for the regular season. Brian Atkins did it in three consecutive years 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 while Terry Hopewell averaged a double-double during Concord's 2015-16 MEC Championship season. Rahama's 274 rebounds are now ranked top 20 in program history for a single season. Against Alderson Broaddus this winter, Rahama had a double-double of 20 points and 11 rebounds at home, but was held to six rebounds, his lowest total of the year, and 17 points against Alderson Broaddus in November.
INSTANT CLASSICS
Wednesday night will be the first postseason meeting between Concord and Alderson Broaddus since the 2010-2011 season in what was hall of fame coach Steve Cox's final game on the sidelines. However, the second meeting this season was full of excitement as AB won at CU, 101-100 in double overtime. Over the 50 minutes, the game featured 11 ties and eight lead changes. Along with Rahama's double-double, Heller netted 25 points which was two off his season high. Harper scored 21 points in 33 minutes before fouling out. The Mountain Lions connected on a season-high 13 three-pointers, but was outrebounded 50-38 in the defeat. Concord picked up an 81-66 win in November, however, both meetings last year were tight with CU sweeping the season series, 75-73 and 85-80.
FAMILIAR SPOT
Wednesday marks the third time in the last four seasons that the Maroon and Gray plays in the 8 vs. 9 game of the MEC Tournament, and in the two previous instances—2020 and 2021—Concord has won. Three years ago, CU was victorious over Notre Dame, 73-68, before picking off Davis & Elkins 107-100 in double overtime. And like Wednesday's meeting, the two previous times the Mountain Lions have been in the primetime slot in the first round of the MEC Tournament, West Liberty awaits the winner. Heller was a catalyst for Concord defeating Davis & Elkins two seasons ago as he dropped in 28 points that included six three-pointers while also handing out six assists.
FINDING THE STROKE
The Mountain Lions enter Wednesday night having shot 45 percent or better in five of their last eight games. And CU could get an added boost from the Alderson Broaddus defense that allows teams to shoot nearly 50 percent, 49.7 which is 11th in the conference. In November's road win, Concord shot 53.2 percent from the field, including 59.3 percent in the second half. Harper missed just one shot, 7-for-8, on his way to 17 points. Laidler was 7-of-10 from the floor in scoring 15 points while Rahama was 50 percent (6-for-12). On January 28, CU just missed 45 percent shooting as it hit on 44.4 percent from the floor. Heller was a very efficient 8-of-12 in scoring his 25 points.
SHOOTER'S GYM
Concord looks to have a repeat performance of last year's MEC Tournament game against Charleston when it shot 47.6 percent from the field and 47.8 percent from three-point distance in making 11 triples. Heller and Laidler each scored 11 points as Laidler only missed one shot, 5-of-6, off the bench in 15 minutes of action. Rahama just missed a double-double with 14 points and eight rebounds as he made five of his 12 attempts from the floor. CU and Alderson Broaddus play a little differently as Concord is tied for 21st nationally in scoring (83.6 points) while the Battlers only score 76.5 points per game, but have won three of their last four games entering Wednesday night.
